Hello! Today’s story is about “Hanlon’s Razor”

Today, I’d like to write about a concept with a slightly unusual name: “Hanlon’s Razor.” When you hear the name, you might think, “Sounds kind of scary…?” but it’s actually an idea that’s very relatable and gives us a gentle perspective.

Have you ever thought, “That person might hate me…”?

For example, have you ever experienced something like this?

Slow replies on LINE
Made eye contact but wasn’t greeted
Ignored when you asked for a favor

At times like that, you get anxious and think, “Could they dislike me?” I often feel that way too. And I get depressed all on my own.

What is Hanlon’s Razor?

That’s where “Hanlon’s Razor” comes in.

This phrase is originally “Hanlon’s Razor” in English. The meaning is roughly like this:

“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”

…The wording is a bit harsh, isn’t it? To put it a little more softly:

“Even if someone seems to be acting mean, it might just be carelessness or inattention.”

It’s a way of thinking like this.

Who said it first? Who is Robert J. Hanlon?

This phrase is said to have first appeared in a book published in 1980 called “Murphy’s Law Book Two.”

The idea submitted by Robert J. Hanlon, one of the contributors, was used exactly as is, which is how it got the name “Hanlon’s Razor.”

By the way, the “Razor” part means like a philosophical tool to “shave off the unnecessary and think simply,” and alongside Ockham’s Razor, it’s a phrase used to organize one’s thoughts.

It gets exhausting when you assume “They meant harm”

For example, when your email is ignored at work.

If you think, “Why won’t they reply? Do they hate me?”, you just get more and more negative.

But if you really think about it,

They just happened to overlook it
They wrote a reply but didn’t send it
Their smartphone notifications got buried

Reasons like these are surprisingly common. And we often mess up ourselves.

The weird thing about being forgiving of your own mistakes but strict with others

For example, when you forget to reply to a friend’s LINE.

You might reply with a totally innocent vibe like, “Ah, sorry! I missed the notification~”.

But when someone does the same thing to you, you think, “I was ignored.”

This happens a lot. People are very understanding of their own circumstances, but it’s hard to see other people’s circumstances.

Assuming “malice” is actually a loss

When someone does something to you, if you assume “they meant harm,” you make an enemy out of that person in your heart.

But they might just be clumsy, or maybe they’re just overwhelmed with other things.

Of course, there are truly rude people, and it’s natural to be hurt when treated poorly.

But your heart will feel a little lighter if you don’t jump to the conclusion that “it must be malicious.”

That being said, I’m not saying you should just put up with everything

Please don’t misunderstand here; I don’t mean to say “You’re just worrying too much about everything.”

When something unpleasant is done to you, it’s okay to think, “That was terrible.”

However, rather than deciding “That person has a bad personality” or “They tried to hurt me on purpose,”

I’m suggesting that it might be nice to have the leeway to think, “Maybe they had their own reasons.”

So: Looking at things a little more gently might change your world

I think Hanlon’s Razor is less about “Let’s be kind to people” and more about a “Way to protect your own heart.”

When you sense malice in people’s actions, your own feelings get strained too.

But if you can think, “Maybe it was just a mistake, or they just didn’t have the capacity,” you feel a little more at ease.

It’s a way of thinking you can use for yourself in that way.

What Does It Mean to Understand?

Hello!

Today, I would like to talk about the theme, “What does it mean to understand?”

Is “understanding” actually ambiguous?

There are moments in everyday life when you feel, “I get it!” But if you think about it carefully, is that “understanding” really complete comprehension?

For example, driving a car. If you step on the accelerator, it moves forward, and if you step on the brake, it stops. You might say you “understand” this. However, there are probably very few people who can explain in detail what is happening inside the engine.

Is complete understanding necessary?

Actually, even if you don’t understand everything completely, it often doesn’t interfere with daily life. Even if you don’t know the internal structure of a smartphone, you can make phone calls and send messages, right?

But that doesn’t mean you should make light of “understanding.” Deepening your understanding can lead to new discoveries and realizations.

There are also many things we don’t understand

There are many things in the world that have not yet been elucidated. For example, the mechanisms of human emotions and consciousness, the origin of the universe, and so on. These are fields that are still not completely “understood” even as science advances.

Even in the world of mathematics, there are unsolved problems like “Goldbach’s conjecture,” despite being simple problems.

The value of “understanding”

As your “understanding” grows, you can explain things with confidence and communicate effectively with others. Having knowledge also has the advantage of making you less likely to be misled by misinformation.

A humble attitude is important

Recognizing what you “don’t understand” leads to humility. And it is precisely because of this recognition that the desire to keep learning is born.

Game Boy

The original Game Boy is a handheld game console released by Nintendo in 1989. Later, successor models such as Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance were released.

① Sa・Ga2: Hihou Densetsu (Final Fantasy Legend II)

An RPG released by Square (currently Square Enix) in 1990. It’s a story where you earnestly collect treasures known as MAGI across various stages. This was the first RPG I ever played.

② Kirby’s Dream Land

An action game released by Nintendo in 1992. Developed by HAL Laboratory. It’s a game where you progress by inhaling enemies or inhaling air to float in the sky. The music and sound effects are also quite well done, making it a highly rhythmic title.

③ Pokémon Red and Green

An RPG released by Nintendo in 1996. Developed by Nintendo EAD, Game Freak, and Creatures. Afterwards, it was made into an anime and became explosively popular, but I’ve only played this first generation.

What is Hegel’s Dialectic?

Hegel grasped the positive significance of the contradictions that reason falls into, and argued that in general, all finite things produce their opposites driven by inherent contradictions, and through mediation, they are both sublated to a higher stage, establishing this as the principle of all movement in the real world. My interpretation is that all ideologies, assertions, and ideas in the real world are not simply correct in a one-sided manner. They always contain contradictions within them, and in the process of understanding and incorporating these opposing structures, one’s awareness develops to a higher level.

I think this applies not only to human thinking but also to all phenomena in the natural world.

For all matter, every action has a reaction; every movement involves friction; gravity is not just for the sun and earth but mutually affects all matter. The currents of rivers and winds don’t just flow in one direction; they are subjected to various forces, changing their flow moment by moment.

Speaking in technical terms, computer programs also inherently contain bugs, and by resolving them, they evolve into higher-level programs. A program without bugs could be considered an uninteresting, stagnant program. It will eventually become obsolete.

The surrounding environment is constantly changing with the times. Instead of ignoring self-contradictions, strangely justifying them, or rigidly fixing our mindsets, I want us to always review our ways of thinking and perceiving things, flexibly adapting our thoughts.
