Tools for those who “have logic but can’t write code.” Why I created LogicPad

Hello, I’m kenji. I’m the creator of the low-code tool “LogicPad”. This time, rather than introducing the product, I’d like to write about the behind-the-scenes of the development—“Why did I decide to make this?"—and my own thoughts from a slightly personal perspective.

To be honest, this was not just another tool development. My past, frustrations at the workplace, skill set, and the smoldering desire to “create my own product someday”— LogicPad was born as a result of all these things overlapping.

In other words, this is my “life’s culmination project.” I’ll write about this background as honestly and passionately as possible.

I wanted a product I could proudly say, “I made this.”

To be frank, this was my very first motivation.

Since a long time ago, I loved writing code for both work and hobbies. I’ve been involved in various developments. But one day, I suddenly realized. “I have no product released into the world under my own name, with my own responsibility.”

Of course, there is value in what you make as a team, and there was plenty of work I could be proud of. But somewhere in my mind, there was a sense of emptiness, wondering, “Am I going to finish my career under someone else’s name like this?”

Just once is enough. I want to leave something behind that I can proudly say, “I made this.” With that thought, I started conceptualizing LogicPad. This was about 6 years ago (around 2019). (The original idea itself came about 10 years ago in 2015 when I learned about Blueprint, the visual programming language of Unreal Engine.)

It’s a waste to hold back just because you can’t write code, isn’t it?

There were many excellent people at my workplace.

They could build logic. They mastered Excel functions freely and could see through to the essence of a problem. But—when it came to the stage of “writing code,” their hands would stop.

“I’m doing this task while looking at a manual every time, but couldn’t it be automated?” “Yeah, it can. But… you’d have to write code for that…”

Conversations like that happened countless times.

Every time, I thought: “It’s such a waste that people who understand the logic get stopped by the wall of code.”

The Choice of a Low-Code Editor

Actually, in my previous job, I was developing a 2D CAD operated by GUI. With CAD, you assemble shapes using a mouse, right? In other words, it’s a world where you “build logic through operations.”

I thought, “This is incredibly compatible with low-code.”

Going back even further, since my student days, I was mass-producing small programs—image processing, numerical processing, Windows tools, automatic SNS posting tools, etc.—by writing code as soon as I thought of them. I think there are over 600 of them. They are still on GitHub today.

Back then, I didn’t think about the meaning. I just “made things because I wanted to make them.” That was it.

But now, while making LogicPad…

I felt like the dots were finally connected into a line.

Easy to Use, Yet Powerful. The Difficulty of Balance

While proceeding with development, what I constantly thought about was “Making a tool that is intuitively usable and genuinely powerful.”

If you add features, you can do more. But it becomes harder to use. If you make it simple, anyone can touch it. But then some people will find it lacking.

So that people won’t say, “Low-code tools are just toys, right?” But also so they won’t say, “You have to write code in the end anyway.”

I fought continuously on that fine line between intuition and expressiveness.

I rebuilt the UI many times, threw it away many times, and when I finally got closer to a form where I thought, “This can work,” I was truly happy.

Saved by the Very First “User’s” Words

The first person I handed LogicPad to was a former colleague. They weren’t good at IT, and code was scary. But they were good at logic.

After I explained a bit and had them try it out… the single phrase they said a few minutes later, I still can’t forget.

“With this, I think even I could do it!”

I almost cried. This was exactly what I wanted to give them.

Not just a working tool, but the feeling of “I made it myself!”. I was convinced that this is the true value of LogicPad.

When More People Can Create, Society Becomes More Interesting

I genuinely believe that the “democratization of technology” is crucial.

Technology has the power to change the world. But the people who can handle it are limited.

What if you could build apps just by “understanding the logic”?

More people will be able to join the “creating side.” And I believe that what gets born from there will exceed our current imagination.

If LogicPad could become that gateway. I want it to be a tool that turns “I want to try making it” into “I can make it.”

That is my wish.

In Conclusion

LogicPad is still in beta and not finished yet. There are a mountain of improvements and things I want to do.

But I’ve poured all the “dots” of my life into this tool. Now, I can say with pride:

“This is a product that I made.”

“Mental Security” Needed to Avoid Being Drawn into Conspiracy Theories

When browsing the internet, you may sometimes come across “conspiracy theory”-like stories.

“Isn’t there someone operating behind the scenes of this event?” “Could the real truth be hidden?” Many of you have probably seen such narratives spread in a plausible manner.

To avoid being drawn too deeply into such information, it is very important to develop not only “knowledge” and “thinking skills” but also your state of mind—in other words, your “mental security.”

Here are six effective ways of thinking for this purpose.

Do Not Immediately Connect Anxiety with an “Answer”

A major characteristic of conspiracy theories is that they present a clear and simple “answer” to anxieties and questions.

For example, to questions like:

“Why did such an incident happen?”
“Who is benefiting from this?”

When a plot like “Actually, XX is manipulating things behind the scenes” is shown, it is easy to inadvertently be convinced.

However, especially when you feel anxious, it is important to reserve judgment and not jump to conclusions right away.

The “ability to remain in a state of not knowing” is a sign of intellectual maturity.

Intentionally Broaden Your Information Sources

Many people who fall deep into conspiracy theories tend to intensively view only “information with similar perspectives.”

This is called “confirmation bias,” a psychological bias where one is exposed only to information that reinforces one’s existing beliefs.

In particular, the algorithms of social media and video sites constantly push posts that seem to match your preferences, which can naturally narrow your perspective.

Consciously aiming for a diversification of information sources can help avoid this risk, such as:

Accessing media with different viewpoints
Viewing overseas news and academic sources
Listening to opinions that differ from your own

Do Not Think “I Won’t Be Fooled”

People who are knowledgeable or logical can actually be more susceptible to being drawn into conspiracy theories.

If you assume, “I can notice the truth that others don’t,” that becomes a factor that clouds your judgment.

No matter how careful you are, humans make mistakes. That is exactly why acting on the premise that you too might be fooled can be considered a more rational attitude.

“Doubting, yet not jumping to conclusions” becomes your defense.

Look at the Structure, Without Being Pulled by the Story

Conspiracy theories always come with a “dramatic narrative.”

The conflict between good and evil
Rulers and the ruled
The awakened self vs. the brainwashed others

Such simple dichotomies may be attractive as a story, but they do not necessarily reflect reality correctly.

Real-world events and social movements involve a tangle of many elements, such as complex causal relationships, historical backgrounds, and institutional structures.

It is important to have a perspective that understands structurally “why things are the way they are,” without getting too emotionally pulled into the story.

Do Not Leave Loneliness Unaddressed

Behind the strong attraction to conspiracy theories, there may be hidden “isolation” or a “lack of a place to belong.”

When people feel lonely, they become deeply dependent on individuals or groups that understand them. Conspiracy theory communities can sometimes function as that “place to belong.”

Therefore, making efforts not to become lonely also contributes to your mental security.

For example, actions such as:

Having regular conversations with people
Joining communities where you can share hobbies and interests
Having connections offline, not just online

can lead to mental stability.

Focus on Dialogue Rather Than Denial

Even if someone close to you leans toward conspiracy theories, denying them outright can backfire.

When their beliefs are denied, people tend to psychologically protect them (known as “defensive cognition”).

Instead, taking a dialogue-based approach can create the possibility of naturally broadening the other person’s perspective:

Asking carefully, “What made you think that?”
Gently offering your own perspective, such as “There might be this way of thinking too.”

Conclusion: What You Can Do to Keep Your Distance from Conspiracy Theories

Have the ability to suspend judgment and not immediately connect anxiety with answers
Diversify information sources and be aware of biases
Recognize that your own judgment is not absolute
Look at things through structures and causal relationships, not stories
Avoid loneliness and maintain connections
Face others’ conspiracy theories with dialogue rather than denial

It is said that whether one is attracted to conspiracy theories is influenced more by psychological states and environmental factors than by the amount of knowledge.

Therefore, without assuming “I am fine,” making a gradual effort in your daily life to enhance your mental security will surely become a great support for living flexibly in the future information society.

Splatoon 2

Splatoon 2 is probably the game I’ve played the longest in my life. I’ve barely played the story mode, but the 4v4 online matchmaking is very well done. Being able to play against people around my skill level gives it a captivating appeal that never gets old. Also, it is fun to read the movement patterns of both opponents and teammates and think of strategies to win.

Weapons

The weapons I use most often, in order, are the “Foil Squeezer”, “Splattershot Jr.”, “Splat Roller”, and “Foil Flingza Roller”. The “Splattershot Jr.” is a beginner-friendly weapon, and I used it a lot in the early stages.

Regarding Level

(If I get too high up, the opponents get stronger and the tension rises, making it less enjoyable.)

Play Time

My playtime has exceeded 2,500 hours.

Future Goals

My goal is to maintain my game level and have fun playing, but I would like to max out my money and gear. Since Splatoon 3 came out, matchmaking has been taking longer and sometimes fails entirely, so I want to keep playing while hoping the player base doesn’t decrease any further.

I would like to introduce the Chrome extensions I am currently using. Although they are for Chrome, they can also be used in Microsoft Edge.

1. simpleGestures

An extension that enables the use of mouse gestures. It allows you to control the browser without using the keyboard or aiming for toolbar buttons.

For example, sliding the mouse to the left while holding down the right mouse button goes back, and sliding the mouse to the right while holding down the right mouse button goes forward.

This is also highly reliable because it is open source.

2. uBlock Origin

An extension that blocks advertisements. Highly reliable because it is open source. It also operates comfortably with low CPU and memory usage.

3. DeepL Translation

A Chrome extension that allows you to translate pages using the world-famous translation service DeepL. When you select the text you want to translate on the browser, the DeepL icon appears, and clicking it automatically translates the text.
